A chance idea at a curating workshop held in Gympie last August has led to a unique touring regional art exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition has been displayed at the Gympie Regional Art Gallery, the new Hervey Bay Regional Art Gallery and – from last Friday until the end of this month – at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery.<\/p>\n

It’s called “Curator’s Choice – Eclecticism” and features works from South Burnett, Gympie and Wide Bay artists which have been individually selected as outstanding examples of contemporary regional art by the 16 art gallery curators who took the course.<\/p>\n

The exhibition was unveiled in the Alison Iszlaub Gallery on Friday night and produced an immediately favourable reaction from the 60 who came for the opening night.<\/p>\n

It features a wide range of works from paintings to sculpture executed in a variety of media ranging from oils to acrylics, wire to pastels.<\/p>\n

Subjects varied from Hivesville artist Shannus O’Sullivan’s haunting depiction of the Lambing Flats massacre (on loan from the South Burnett Regional Council’s collection) to “The Serpent Said You Shall Not Die” by Christopher Hardwick, a quirky wire mesh sculpture that took the People’s Choice Award on the night.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Front Gallery was filled with a collection of works in oils, acrylics, watercolours and pastels by Terry Readman.<\/p>\n

Readman only took up pastels two years ago but has several impressive works on display.<\/p>\n

The Third Gallery features “Fabulous Fakes” by artist Jan Lewis who’s been entering a national competition to produce fakes of famous artworks for the past nine years to broaden her skills.<\/p>\n

On Friday night the Gallery also drew a raffle it’s been running as a fundraiser since late last year for an artwork donated by Shannus O’Sullivan worth several thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

The winner was Moira Reilly of Kingaroy.<\/p>\n
