{"id":321968,"date":"2022-07-25T20:11:33","date_gmt":"2022-07-25T10:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=321968"},"modified":"2022-07-25T20:24:50","modified_gmt":"2022-07-25T10:24:50","slug":"exports-key-to-ease-avolanche","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2022\/07\/25\/exports-key-to-ease-avolanche\/","title":{"rendered":"Exports Key To Ease &#8216;Avolanche&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_321975\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-321975\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-321975\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott.jpg 740w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott-340x211.jpg 340w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/piapigott-263x163.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-321975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RaboResearch associate analyst Pia Piggott &#8230; ramping up avocado exports &#8220;will be critical&#8221; (Photo: Rabobank)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>July 25, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Australia will need to both eat and export more avocados as growers negotiate a predicted soaring growth in production over the next five years, agribusiness bank Rabobank says in a new report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Per capita supply&#8221; of avocados is estimated to be up 26 per cent this year over the previous 12 months to 4.8kg, ie. 22 avocados for every Australian.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Avolanche&#8221; report says a significant maturing of avocado trees during the past season \u2013 primarily in Western Australia and Queensland \u2013 has resulted in a bumper crop, causing a national oversupply.<\/p>\n<p>Retail prices fell to a record low of $1 each in June last year and again early this month; prices for 2022 remain tracking at 47 per cent below the five-year average.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While the low prices have been welcomed by consumers, they have put considerable pressure on grower margins, already squeezed by increasing input costs and labour shortages, says report author Pia Piggott.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bumper 2021-22 crop in Western Australia was a turning point,\u201d Ms Piggott said, \u201cwith industry estimates of avocado production in the State being up a staggering 265 per cent on the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>WA \u2013 along with imports from New Zealand \u2013 supplies the majority of Australia\u2019s avocados during spring and summer.<\/p>\n<p>All other Australian avocado-growing regions \u2013 except North Queensland, which had a record harvest the previous year \u2013 have also seen slight year-on-year increases in production in 2022, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Australia\u2019s avocado production for 2021-22 is estimated at 124,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>Coupled with estimated imports of 12,500 tonnes for the year, this has meant abundant supplies for consumers, Ms Piggott said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The report said the past year\u2019s market oversupply in Australia was \u201cjust the beginning\u201d with industry forecasts that domestic avocado production would expand by 40 per cent (or 50,000 tonnes) during the next five years, reaching 173,000 tonnes in 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ms Piggott said all avocado-growing regions in Australia were expecting production growth.<\/p>\n<p>Regaining balance in Australia\u2019s avocado market would require both \u201cincreased domestic demand and larger export volumes\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><strong>Local Consumption<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The good news was consumers\u2019 appetite for avocados remained healthy, both in Australia and abroad \u2013 with local demand forecast to continue to grow while demand was also expanding in offshore markets, providing Australia\u2019s export sector with a platform for growth, the report said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2021-22, the average volume of avocados consumed by each Australian household increased 31.2 per cent on the previous year. This was despite households spending 29.1 per cent less on avocados due to lower prices.<\/p>\n<p>The number of Australian households buying avocados also rose 6 per cent over the previous 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>However, increasing domestic consumption of avocados would not be enough to use up the &#8220;avolanche&#8221; of additional local production in coming years so ramping up exports would be critical in ensuring the market finds a better balance to support sustainable prices for growers.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><strong>Exports<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ms Piggott said Australian export volumes of avocados rose by more than 350 per cent during the past year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Singapore and Hong Kong markets have been stand-out performers, with Australia growing to account for 46 per cent and 12 per cent market share of their avocado imports, respectively,\u201d Ms Piggott said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalaysia remains an integral export market and has re-bounded from COVID-related impacts, with Australian exports making up 46 per cent of the total imported avocados into Malaysia. Exports to the rest of the world are also up, including to the Middle East and Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rise of avocado consumption in Asia presents an ongoing opportunity for exporters but competition is on the rise from other exporters, such as Mexico and South America.<\/p>\n<p>There are also other challenges, including significant trade barriers, with Australia currently having either limited or no access to three of the largest avocado-importing markets in Asia: Japan, China and South Korea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia will need to both eat and export more avocados as growers negotiate a predicted soaring growth in production over the next five years, agribusiness bank Rabobank says in a new report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":321975,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[83,1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
