{"id":321305,"date":"2022-07-13T14:44:39","date_gmt":"2022-07-13T04:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=321305"},"modified":"2022-07-13T20:01:10","modified_gmt":"2022-07-13T10:01:10","slug":"blackbutt-water-is-safe-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2022\/07\/13\/blackbutt-water-is-safe-council\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackbutt Water Is Safe: Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_234302\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-234302\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/mark-pitt-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-234302\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/mark-pitt-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/mark-pitt-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/mark-pitt-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-234302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">SBRC CEO Mark Pitt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>July 13, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Regional Council has assured Blackbutt residents their water is safe to drink, despite current discolouration.<\/p>\n<p>Council CEO Mark Pitt said a pipeline issue and a change of the source of the raw water &#8211; combined with rainfall and surface water run-off &#8211; had increased turbidity, making it difficult to produce clear water.<\/p>\n<p>Blackbutt usually receives its water from Boondooma Dan, but due to a pipeline issue water is currently being sourced from Boobir Creek Dam.<\/p>\n<p>This water high in iron and manganese but is safe to drink.<\/p>\n<p>During rainfall, elevated dissolved iron and manganese can become suspended in the water.<\/p>\n<p>When chlorine is added to disinfect the water supply, it also oxidises these dissolved trace metals which then causes the water to appear rusty or tea-coloured.<\/p>\n<p>This discoloured water can build up in low flow areas of the network and cause pockets of discoloured water that, while aesthetically displeasing, are bacteriologically safe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr Pitt said Council&#8217;s water team was working to resolve the problem with plans to air scour the pipe network during the next month.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The initial treatment is usually to change the water source,&#8221; Mr Pitt said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, that hasn&#8217;t been possible for the past three weeks due to a pipeline problem. An alternative interim treatment is localised flushing at fire hydrants to bleed the system, however this is not always successful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best treatment, and the one chosen by Council, is air scouring, the most expensive and complex solution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This can only be done once Boondooma water is again the water source as this process uses a lot of water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This strategy takes several weeks and involves scouring all mains in the town.
