Mask mandates are not on the cards in Queensland at the moment, despite a big surge in COVID cases that seems likely to eclipse last summer’s second wave<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Queensland Health has reported five more COVID-19 deaths in the Darling Downs Health region, taking the toll since the pandemic began to 67.<\/p>\n

The latest figure was released on Tuesday morning, taking the number of deaths since July 1 to 17.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the death toll for all of Queensland stood at 1338, up from 1254 on July 1.<\/p>\n

When the State borders re-opened on December 13, the State\u2019s death toll for the whole pandemic stood at seven.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, there were officially 43,047 active cases of COVID-19 in Queensland, a number that is vastly underestimated.<\/p>\n

There were 860 people being treated for COVID-19 in Queensland hospitals, including 12 in intensive care units.<\/p>\n

Queensland’s third wave of COVID-19 has now outgrown the second with daily hospitalisations.<\/p>\n

Authorities expect the number of cases will keep climbing as winter continues.<\/p>\n

However, Queensland’s Chief Health Officer John Gerrard ruled out any return to mask mandates on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cMask use, as it is outlined, is what we will continue,” Mr Gerrard told media.<\/p>\n

“I think the idea of actually having general mandates for wearing masks indoors is not something we\u2019ll be considering.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
