South Burnett Regional Council has invested $150,000 in installing new water troughs and splityard gates at the Coolabunia Saleyards.<\/p>\n

The investment follows discussions with the Coolabunia Saleyards Working Group which is made up of Council representatives, community members and representatives from sales agents.<\/p>\n

A total of 56 troughs have been installed in holding and selling pens by Project Water, a Kingaroy-based irrigation company.<\/p>\n

Isolation taps have also been installed on existing storage tanks, a new ring line installed and a bore pump overhauled.<\/p>\n

Mayor Brett Otto, councillors and representatives from cattle agents Aussie Land and Livestock inspected the upgrades on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The new troughs will improve animal welfare while the splityard gates have effectively created more selling pens.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis has certainly lifted the look and feel out at the yards and has been well received by agents, users and the general public,\u201d Mayor Otto said.<\/p>\n

Cr Scott Henschen, one of the Council representatives on the working group, said water troughs were an extremely important part of saleyards these days.<\/p>\n

“Producers and purchasers like to see stock presented in ‘full’ condition. A beast can drink up to and in excess of 45 litres per day. The new water troughs in the saleyards have provided a much better source of water which has made cattle more content, and much more efficient to maintain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cr Kathy Duff, another Council representative on the working group, said Coolabunia Saleyards were not only a place to sell cattle, but also a social gathering point for rural people.<\/p>\n

“It is important that the yards are safe and well maintained for the welfare of the cattle and to support the important rural industries that rely on this selling complex,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

James Bredhauer, from Aussie Land and Livestock, welcomed the upgrades as well as recent improved telecommunications facilities at the saleyards.<\/p>\n

More upgrades are planned at the Coolabunia Saleyards in the future.<\/p>\n
