Prompt action by a Nanango resident has foiled an overnight graffiti attack on the town’s much-loved murals.<\/p>\n

Drayton Street shopkeepers were shocked to discover on Thursday morning that several shopfronts and murals in Little Drayton Street had been sprayed with graffiti.<\/p>\n

The attack is believed to have occurred late on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, and appear to have been carried out by teenagers.<\/p>\n

Nanango resident Leo Erkens was particularly upset some of the town’s murals were defaced.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But when he discovered the paint used by the vandals was still wet, he set about removing it using turps, water, rags and elbow grease.<\/p>\n

His prompt action meant the worst of the mural damage was able to be removed by lunch time, along with several tags on a nearby fence.<\/p>\n

Nanango Real Estate agent Jane Erkens – who was one of the shopkeepers also hit in the attack – said she believed the people responsible would have been captured by the town’s CCTV system.<\/p>\n

She has asked police to review videotapes so the culprits can be identified and action taken.<\/p>\n

Mrs Erkens, who is currently ahead in the poll for Division 1 in the recent South Burnett Regional Council by-election, said she did not believe the attack on her business was politically motivated.<\/p>\n
