The Wondai Wolves ran away in the second half to overcome Nanango in the A Grade rugby league match of the round played on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Stags were only narrowly defeated in the first two rounds of the competition so the match against the unbeaten Wolves at Wondai had been much anticipated.<\/p>\n

Nanango opened the scoring with a try to Pat McCallum after just \u00a0four minutes.<\/p>\n

Wondai immediately hit back with Jameel Sullivan crossing and Luke Hedges adding the extra points.<\/p>\n

Five minutes later, McCallum scored in the corner after handling the ball twice in an across-field passing manoeuvre that outflanked the Wolves’ defenders.<\/p>\n

Sadly for Nanango’s supporters, these were the last points the Stags would add on the day.<\/p>\n

Wondai scored twice more before half-time (Bradley Alberts and Jack McDowell), and narrowly missed a third after desperate Nanango defence pushed the ball into touch. \u00a0At half-time Wondai led 16-8.<\/p>\n

The second half was all the home team.<\/p>\n

Tries were scored by Brody Litfin, Luke Bond, Shane Cliff, Chris Bond and Jameel Sullivan.<\/p>\n

However the final scoreline of 42-8 didn’t reflect the intensity of the game. \u00a0Nanango pressured the Wolves throughout the first 15 minutes of the second half, but could not convert this into points … at one point being held up over the line.<\/p>\n

Another blow for Nanango occurred when their most dangerous player, Pat McCallum, appeared to suffer an ankle injury in a tackle.<\/p>\n

* * *<\/strong><\/center>In the earlier match played at Wondai, the Cherbourg Hornets returned to their 2012 premiership-winning form with a vengeance, thumping Blackbutt 74-8.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But to be fair to the Timbertowners, it was Blackbutt Show day and they only had a restricted number of players available.<\/p>\n

Cherbourg scored 13 tries (Faron Aubrey 3, Charlie Bond 2, Daniel Cobbo 2, Alex Speedy, Ivan Harrison, Mark Saltner, Robert Miller, Cyril Georgetown, Bowman Dynevor). Goal-kicking whizz Fred Aubrey only missed two conversions, finishing the day with 11 goals.<\/p>\n

The Timbertowners didn't stop trying ... with six minutes left on the clock, and the scoreline blown out, desperate defence stopped a certain Hornets' try<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In the Bundaberg U18s competition, \u00a0Murgon was defeated by Across The Waves by 46-16 at Salter Park in Bundaberg.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After three rounds, they’re coming equal second in the competition.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, they’ll be playing a home game at Murgon Sportsground against Fraser Coast. This game is scheduled to start at 1:00pm.<\/p>\n

\nFour South Burnett juniors have been selected to play for the Wide Bay squad following the weekend’s 47th Battalion matches in Maryborough:

  • Under 13 – Luke Matthews (Nanango) and Thomas Springate (Nanango)<\/li>\n
  • Under 14 – Barry Tapau-Fewquandie (Murgon) and Dawson Cross (Central Burnett)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Wide Bay will play at the State Carnival in June<\/p>\n

    SBJRL Secretary Lisa Weir said the U13s played well but were unable to pull off a win.<\/p>\n

    “It is their first go at Rep football and they did the South Burnett proud,” she said.<\/p>\n

    “The \u00a0U14s came away with two wins and nearly beat Sunny Coast Gold who ended up taking out this division,” Lisa said.<\/p>\n

    “Congrats to our boys – they also have done our area proud.”<\/p>\n

    Don’t forget,\u00a0three Broncos players will be visiting the South Burnett this weekend to talk to fans and watch junior matches.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Andrew McCullough, \u00a0Alex Glenn and David Hala will be at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy from 9:45am-11:00am, Murgon from 11:45am-12:45pm and Cherbourg from 1:00pm-2:00pm.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s also going to be a big weekend in senior league, with the Wide Bay Northern Rangers \u2013 which has eight South Burnett players \u2013 taking on the South West Mustangs at Lyle Vidler from 3:00pm on Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
