Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) has been detected in a third Queensland piggery, believed to be in the South Burnett region.<\/p>\n

A Biosecurity Queensland spokesperson would not confirm the location but said the Department was working directly with piggery owners to minimise any risks to them and their workers.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re asking all piggery operators across Queensland to be vigilant and keep a look out for any signs of JEV,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

The virus circulates in mosquitos and is transmitted to animals and people through bites.<\/p>\n

It is not transmitted from person to person.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Queensland authorities are working with other States and Territories, and industry, to minimise risks.<\/p>\n

There is no risk to people from eating pig meat and all Australian-produced pork remains safe to consume.<\/p>\n

If producers see any of signs of JEV, they should immediately contact a veterinarian, Biosecurity Queensland on 13-25-23, or call the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800-675-888.<\/p>\n
