The newly reformed South Burnett Thrashers rugby union team travelled to Condamine at the weekend for their first trial games ahead of the season opening round on April 9.<\/p>\n

Club vice-president\u00a0Jason Lee said 20 players made the trip, eight of whom had never played rugby union before the two trial matches.<\/p>\n

“Our first game was against Condamine Cods which were a mix of A grade and B grade players,” Jason said.<\/p>\n

“In the first half we only had limited possession of the ball and when we did get the ball we were rusty with a few mistakes.\u00a0However, to the credit of the players our defence was exceptional, only letting in one try.<\/p>\n

“In the second half we put together some great plays.<\/p>\n

“The rucking and mauling from the forwards were of a high standard, and the backline was able to put together some consistent attacking plays where they were able to exploit their talents and scored our first try, however we let in another late try.<\/p>\n

“The final score was 12-5.<\/p>\n

“Our second game was against the very strong Taroom Drovers who play in the Central Queensland competition, playing against the likes of Rockhampton.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The team played very well in both halves with strong defence however Taroom were just too strong, putting on two tries with excellent back line moves and they kept us scoreless.<\/p>\n

“One positive takeaway from the game was the Thrashers’ great defence on our try line, keeping out many scoring attempts.”<\/p>\n

The Thrashers will be competing in the Darling Downs C Grade competition.<\/p>\n

They are now training twice a week, on Wednesdays at 5:00pm at the Wondai Sportsground, and on Saturday afternoons at 4:00pm in Memorial Park, Kingaroy.<\/p>\n
