{"id":314167,"date":"2022-03-03T20:07:20","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T10:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=314167"},"modified":"2025-02-26T15:24:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T05:24:11","slug":"warm-wet-weather-breeds-mozzies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2022\/03\/03\/warm-wet-weather-breeds-mozzies\/","title":{"rendered":"Warm, Wet Weather Breeds Mozzies"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_22781\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22781\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Insect-repellant200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22781\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Insect-repellant200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Insect-repellant200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Insect-repellant200-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Use insect repellent to reduce the risk of mosquito bites<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>March 3, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Regional Council has offered some timely advice to residents to help keep mozzies &#8211; and the diseases they can carry &#8211; at bay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Warm weather and recent rainfall will increase mosquito breeding across the region,&#8221; a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the recent rainfall and the receding flood waters pooling, water can provide perfect conditions for mosquitos to breed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This can result in more mosquitoes, increasing the potential for mosquito-borne diseases in our communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mosquitoes can carry viruses such as Ross River Fever, Barmah Forest Virus and your dogs can also contract heart worm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><strong>Council&#8217;s Advice To Control Mozzies<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Personal protection measures can reduce the risk of you and your family getting bitten by mosquitoes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use insect repellent (in accordance with manufacturer\u2019s instructions), especially when outside at dawn or dusk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear long, loose, light-coloured clothing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Use flying insect spray or plug-in insecticide devices to kill mosquitoes in-doors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Use bed nets, if available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Repair defective insect screens or fit new screens.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You can also help control mosquitoes around the home by taking the following steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pot plant bases:<\/strong> Preferably dispose of the base altogether. Alternatively, empty and clean the base weekly or put sand in it to absorb the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tins, tyres, jars, toys and rubbish items:<\/strong> Any items left lying around the yard that hold water will breed mosquitoes. Store under cover and dispose of all unwanted items.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Roof gutters:<\/strong> Clean out leaves and other debris regularly. Cut back and trim trees. Blocked gutters will breed mosquitoes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bromeliads and other water-holding plants:<\/strong> Other than removing the plants altogether use a high-pressure hose to remove any mosquito larvae.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rainwater, wells and drums:<\/strong> Large water holding containers must be screened with wire gauze no coarser than 1mm mesh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bird baths, fish ponds and ornamental ponds:<\/strong> Clean weekly to remove mosquito larvae.\u00a0Keep Australian native fish in your ponds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Swimming pools:<\/strong> Keep chlorinated and regularly operate the pool pump all year round.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drains or depressions:<\/strong> Maintain drains to allow for water flow.
