{"id":313892,"date":"2022-02-25T19:48:45","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T09:48:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=313892"},"modified":"2022-02-25T19:51:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-25T09:51:17","slug":"deadly-dog-disease-found-in-qld","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2022\/02\/25\/deadly-dog-disease-found-in-qld\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly Dog Disease Found In Qld"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_170025\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170025\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-170025\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mark-furner-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Agriculture Minister Mark Furner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 25, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The State Government is urging dog owners to maintain an effective tick control program after the deadly tick-borne disease\u00a0ehrlichiosis was confirmed in the State last month.<\/p>\n<p>Ehrlichiosis is caused by the bacteria <em>Ehrlichia canis <\/em>and\u00a0spread by brown dog ticks, common in most areas of northern Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The disease was first detected in May 2020 in domesticated dogs in the Halls Creek and Kununurra areas of Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, dogs have become infected in the Northern Territory and northern South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>In January, ehrlichiosis was confirmed in a dog in north-west Queensland which had not travelled outside the State, meaning the bacteria has now spread into the local tick population.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Minister Mark Furner said with the wet season now well under way, dog owners should do all they could to protect their animals from the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not want dog owners to go through the trauma of seeing their beloved dogs suffering the effects of this horrible disease,\u201d Mr Furner said<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAs ticks are more prevalent during the wet season, I cannot stress enough that, to prevent canine ehrlichiosis, dogs should be on a tick prevention program that repels and kills ticks preventing them from attaching to the dog.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDog owners should also watch for any signs of illness, avoid taking dogs into tick-infested areas such as the bush where possible, and regularly inspect dogs for ticks and carefully remove ticks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether your dogs are working dogs or family pets, the only tick they should get is the one that shows you have taken them to your local vet to get good advice and appropriate products to protect them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough they can vary considerably among dogs, clinical signs typically include fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss, and anaemia and bleeding disorders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEveryone involved with dogs has a general biosecurity obligation under the Biosecurity Act 2014 to take all reasonable steps to ensure they do not spread a pest, disease or contaminant, including E. canis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEhrlichiosis is a nationally notifiable disease and anyone who suspects a dog is showing signs of the disease must report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800-675-888.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More information is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business.qld.gov.au\/industries\/farms-fishing-forestry\/agriculture\/livestock\/animal-welfare\/pests-diseases-disorders\/canine-ehrlichiosis\" target=\"_blank\">available online<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The State Government is urging dog owners to maintain an effective tick control program after the deadly tick-borne disease\u00a0ehrlichiosis was confirmed in the State last month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":309949,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
