Toowoomba Regional Council activated its Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) to “Stand Up” status on Friday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe LDMG is co-ordinating with relevant emergency services and will monitor advice and information from the State Disaster Co-ordination Centre and the Bureau of Meteorology,\u201d Mayor Paul Antonio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting heavy rain and storms, with the potential for flash flooding, are likely to continue today and possibly across the weekend for most of southern Queensland, including our region.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is impossible to forecast exactly how much rain will fall in any given location. These weather events are extremely unpredictable. We have seen falls ranging from 100mm to 200mm across vast areas of the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are monitoring rainfall forecasts to gauge where any potential problems could occur. Our flood mitigation measures are working to their design specifications.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur top priority is to ensure all residents are safe and well informed about the potential dangers from possible flood waters. It is better to err on the side of caution. Please keep away from flood water.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome properties have experienced flooding and this could worsen if the rain extends across the weekend.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cProperty owners who need assistance with flooding at their residence are advised to contact the State Emergency Service on 13-25-00, including for the provision of sandbags.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the widespread, heavy rainfall there are many roads across the region that are affected. If possible, please avoid travelling in these conditions. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution in the coming days.<\/p>\n

\u201cMotorists are reminded to heed the simple message, \u2018If it\u2019s flooded, forget it\u2019. Please observe any warning signs and drive to the conditions, however not every hazard will be signposted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWet weather creates many hazards on the roads, such as water over the road, potholes, washouts and slippery surfaces. These conditions persist after the rain has stopped and motorists need to exercise caution.”<\/p>\n

UPDATE:\u00a0The Toowoomba LDMG will be monitoring the rain on Friday night and across the weekend.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mayor Paul Antonio said Council staff and emergency services representatives would keep a watching brief on the rain on Friday night and would respond to any emerging situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing a heavy thunderstorm around 10:00am (Friday), Toowoomba city and most of the region have experienced steady rain,\u201d Mayor Antonio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFalls up to 200mm have caused localised flooding and closed more than 90 Council-controlled roads.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the rain continues, we expect to see more road closures, especially in rural areas across the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease avoid travelling unless it is urgent. Our main concern is to ensure public safety.”<\/p>\n
