The 2022 South Burnett rugby league competition looks set to get off to a late start, with the first round of games pencilled in for April 23.<\/p>\n

The senior competition is expected to have teams from Kingaroy, Nanango, Wondai, Murgon and Cherbourg taking part while the junior competition will herald the return of the Blackbutt Timbertowners.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Eagles Under 15s, Under 16s and Under 17s will be playing in the Toowoomba competition this year. Training for these sides begins this week.<\/p>\n

There’s also an exciting development happening in women’s rugby league with a new Wide Bay competition set to launch.<\/p>\n

South Burnett aims to field Under 14, Under 17 and Open teams in this league.<\/p>\n

Players have already started training for this competition at Wondai Sportsground on Tuesday and Thursday nights.<\/p>\n

Rugby league returned briefly to the South Burnett on Saturday with three pre-season trial games played at T.J. O’Neill Oval in Kingaroy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A good crowd turned up to watch the Western Clydesdales take on the Wide Bay Bulls in Under 16s, Under 18s and Under 19s.<\/p>\n

The Toowoomba-based Clydesdales brought over a host of players, enough in fact to field separate teams in the first and second halves of the men’s Under 16s and Under 18s games.<\/p>\n

The Wide Bay Bulls tested the Clydesdales’ Cyril Connell Challenge and Mal Meninga Cup squads but the Toowoomba sides proved too strong in the end.<\/p>\n

The games were played in quarters but a strong breeze helped to keep the summer heat in check.<\/p>\n

The Under 19s game was a test of the two clubs’ squads for the 2022\u00a0Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Again, the Clydesdales proved triumphant but this time the margin was narrower with the Bulls scoring right on the full-time siren.<\/p>\n

Several South Burnett players turned out in the Bulls’ sides, including Charlie Sippel and\u00a0Malakye Blow\u00a0in the Under 16s; Tyrell Hopkins, Damon Strauf and Fletch Prendergast in the Under 18s; and Samantha Cobbo in the Under 19s.<\/p>\n

    Clydesdales 22 defeated Wide Bay 14 after leading 14-6 at half-time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Try scorers for the Clydesdales were Chace Oates (2), Daniel O’Callaghan, Jake Durie and Tarrant Whittingham.\u00a0 Tait Cameron kicked one goal.<\/p>\n

    For Wide Bay, Tom Morcom and Dawson Hess scored tries, and Lucas Brough kicked one goal.<\/p>\n

      Clydesdales 12 defeated Wide Bay 4 after leading 12-0 at half-time.<\/strong><\/p>\n
