Landholders are being urged by Toowoomba Regional Council to remain vigilant for outbreaks of invasive weeds following recent widespread rain.<\/p>\n

Cr Tim McMahon said recent rain and warm summer temperatures provided perfect conditions for invasive weeds to spread in paddocks, backyards and catchments.<\/p>\n

He said seeds from invasive plants were introduced during the recent drought in fodder supplies or had been brought to life during the recent rain and warm weather after being dormant in the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current conditions are aiding the germination of weeds such as Chilean Needle Grass, Giant Rat\u2019s Tail Grass and Parthenium,\u201d Cr McMahon said.<\/p>\n

“This is occurring on a scale not seen for several years.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe threat is further compounded by heavy rainfall causing water movement that aids the dispersion of pest plants along normally dry drainage lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re calling on residents to be vigilant by treating and reporting outbreaks of invasive plants as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarly intervention can result in localised eradication and reduce long-term management costs.<\/p>\n

\u201cParticular attention should be given to areas where fodder has been fed out in the past 12 months, as well as waterways or creek banks at high water level marks and fence lines that may have trapped floodwater debris.\u201d<\/p>\n
