Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio has slammed a decision by the\u00a0Queensland Local Government Grants Commission to cut the financial contribution to his council.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn local government we\u2019re the community builders for our residents,\u201d Mayor Antonio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo do this, we need adequate funding from the State and Federal Government and any decision to reduce our current level of funding is a kick in the guts to our residents.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the correspondence I\u2019ve received this week, Toowoomba Regional Council is set to become a \u2018minimum grant Council\u2019 under the new Financial Assistance Grant allocation methodology, commencing from the 2022-23 financial year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis means the current allocation we receive under this program will be significantly reduced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis decision has been made on the view that our Council is financially stable enough that it only requires minimum funding revenue which is hard to take.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn other words, we\u2019re being punished because of the way we\u2019ve carefully managed our finances over the years.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cr Geoff McDonald said that under the new methodology, TRC was likely to see its funding allocation drop 23 per cent for the 2022-23 financial year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis financial year we will receive about $14.5 million through Financial Assistance Grant allocations,\u201d Cr McDonald said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a 23 per cent reduction, this will see our funding cut by about $3.3 million in the 2022-23 financial year alone, which will be a huge impost on our community.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the next three financial years we estimate the reduction to be around the $7.9 million mark.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo put this into perspective, the reduction in funding equates to an increase in general rates by an additional 3 per cent, or the equivalent cost of 36 full-time staff. If this were to happen, service levels and\/or financial reserves set aside for critical infrastructure would be eroded.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a terrible outcome for our community and must be addressed immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo ensure our residents aren\u2019t disadvantage in any way, we will be speaking with the Queensland Local Government Grants Commission on this decision as a matter of urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
