Somerset Regional Council is “extremely disappointed” the State Government has not responded to its calls for help to protect the riverbeds and banks in the mid-Brisbane River.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe job of improving and protecting the waterways in south-east Queensland\u00a0catchments is too big for a single council or community group,” Mayor Graeme Lehmann said.<\/p>\n

“We need more help\u00a0and have been calling on the Department of Resources to take action to protect their\u00a0own riverbeds and banks in the mid-Brisbane catchment.<\/p>\n

\u201cCouncil received advice this week from the Director-General of the Department of\u00a0Resources confirming that the State is not in a position to help us protect Brisbane\u2019s\u00a0water supply, and this is extremely disappointing.<\/p>\n

\u201cCouncil took the initiative to install bollards at several locations for community safety\u00a0reasons late last year to prevent inappropriate reactional access to the river\u00a0and riverbank.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Blocking access gives trees and grass time to grow, improving\u00a0riverbank stability and reducing the amount of soil going into the waterway.<\/p>\n

“CCTV\u00a0cameras have also been installed at a number of locations on the mid-Brisbane\u00a0River.<\/p>\n

\u201cRiverbeds and river banks are the responsibility of the State Government, and the\u00a0mid-Brisbane is not just a river, it is south-east Queensland\u2019s water supply.<\/p>\n

“To be told\u00a0that the responsibility sits solely with us is not the response we were expecting.\u201d<\/p>\n
