Murgon’s War Memorial marked its centenary this year<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

November 11, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n

The rain gods smiled on Murgon’s 2021 Remembrance Day service, but it was a very close run thing.<\/p>\n

While a few scattered light showers had peppered the 100 or so people in attendance, within minutes of its conclusion the skies opened up and a deluge rained down.<\/p>\n

This sent guests scattering, with many going to the nearby Services Club for refreshments.<\/p>\n

This year’s commemoration service was particularly special because it marked the centenary of Murgon’s War Memorial.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The foundation stone for the iconic structure was laid in 1920, but it took a full year to be completed before its official dedication in 1921.<\/p>\n

For this reason, Murgon RSL officials pressed on with holding this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies beside the Memorial rather than indoors, despite the ominous weather forecast.<\/p>\n

Murgon RSL Sub-Branch Citizen\u2019s Auxiliary secretary Liz Williamson told southburnett.com.au the club was very happy with the way the day turned out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She was also particularly pleased with the roll-up, especially considering the weather.<\/p>\n

While Anzac Day commemorations are always huge in Murgon, Liz said that about six years ago barely half a dozen people had attended the Remembrance Day service.<\/p>\n

However, numbers have steadily grown every year since.<\/p>\n

This year’s attendances marked a new high water mark.<\/p>\n
