Safety upgrades began on Friday at various locations along the Wide Bay Highway.<\/p>\n

The $1.6 million project had been jointly funded by the Federal ($1.28 million) and State ($320,000) governments.<\/p>\n

The upgrades will create “clear zones” (ie. areas without vegetation) along the side of the highway, as well as reshaping drainage and verge areas to provide an opportunity for vehicles that drift off the highway to recover in safety.<\/p>\n

Regional Roads Minister Bruce Saunders said new guardrails would also be installed.<\/p>\n

\u201cConstruction is expected to take two months and I look forward to locals enjoying a safer drive home through the area,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Member for Wide Bay Llew O\u2019Brien welcomed the investment in a safer Wide Bay Highway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Queensland Government is responsible for funding the maintenance and repair of the Wide Bay Highway but this commitment from the Australian Government encourages the Queensland Government to fast-track and prioritise these improvements, and also means the Queensland Government can now allocate its roads budget to other road projects,\u201d Mr O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
