Work is almost complete on the new $16.6 million single-lane roundabout at the notorious Bells Bridge highway intersection.<\/p>\n

Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the project, at the intersection of the Wide Bay and Bruce highways, would be completed within the next few weeks.<\/p>\n

Construction began in November last year.
\nThe Federal Government contributed $13.7 million towards the project, and the State Government $2.9 million.<\/p>\n

Mr O’Brien said the upgrade was a much-needed step forward in both safety and traffic management.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis intersection was notorious for long delays and queues with traffic turning on to the Bruce Highway during peak times, so the upgrade is another example of the Australian Government listening to the community and taking action to improve road safety,\u201d Mr O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis upgrade will enable the smooth, safe and efficient flow of Wide Bay Highway traffic turning right, improve travel times for freight and general traffic, and most importantly, make the intersection safer for all drivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn conjunction with the Gympie Bypass which is now under construction, it will keep traffic and freight moving, keep communities connected, and benefit Wide Bay and everyone who uses this section of the Bruce Highway.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt also created about 40 jobs throughout construction, supporting Wide Bay\u2019s economic recovery and demonstrates the Australian Government\u2019s record $110 billion infrastructure investment plan in action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said the roundabout would be welcomed by motorists and residents who had called for the upgrade.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said the roundabout would improve safety for Wide Bay Highway motorists and the large number of heavy vehicles which enter the flow of traffic on the Bruce Highway.<\/p>\n

Queensland Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the works would make Queensland\u2019s busiest highway a safer place to drive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis section of the Bruce Highway sees thousands of drivers each day, so helping to keep that traffic moving will be welcomed by many in the community,\u201d Mr Bailey said.<\/p>\n
