{"id":306296,"date":"2021-09-23T18:22:26","date_gmt":"2021-09-23T08:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=306296"},"modified":"2021-09-23T18:22:26","modified_gmt":"2021-09-23T08:22:26","slug":"council-deficit-3-4m-below-forecast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2021\/09\/23\/council-deficit-3-4m-below-forecast\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Deficit $3.4m Below Forecast"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_306297\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-306297\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-306297\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210923otto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210923otto.jpg 740w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210923otto-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210923otto-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210923otto-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210923otto-340x211.jpg 340w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/20210923otto-263x163.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-306297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mayor Brett Otto announced on Thursday the South Burnett Regional Council&#8217;s deficit for 2020-21 appeared likely to be much lower than expected, and had come about without any cuts to services or staff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>September 23, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Regional Council&#8217;s deficit for 2020-21 is expected to be $3.4 million lower than originally forecast.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Mayor Brett Otto said auditors finalising accounts for the annual report are expected to announce Council had a $1.153 million deficit last financial year, not the $4.56 million deficit forecast.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor said the difference was made by savings in employee costs and the costs of materials and services.<\/p>\n<p>The Council also had revenue increases from building and development projects across the region, as well as growth in the number of rateable properties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mayor Otto said the strong financial performance had allowed Council to hand down a zero per cent general rate rise last year and a 1 per cent increase this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said Council had also continued to pay down debt &#8211; which stood at $33.8 million in August &#8211; and had cash holdings of $42.62 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor said he was proud this result was able to be accomplished without reducing Council services or staff.<\/p>\n<p>However, he would continue to look for better ways to deliver services as Council &#8220;pursued a return to surplus&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>One recent improvement, he said, was a reduction of Council&#8217;s &#8220;white fleet&#8221; from 113 to 90 vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>This move was expected to save more than $500,000 during the next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Burnett Regional Council&#8217;s deficit for 2020-21 is expected to be $3.4 million lower than originally forecast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":306297,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22,3],"tags":[1131],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
