{"id":306089,"date":"2021-09-21T11:57:47","date_gmt":"2021-09-21T01:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=306089"},"modified":"2021-09-21T21:10:22","modified_gmt":"2021-09-21T11:10:22","slug":"skills-shortage-hits-qld-mines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2021\/09\/21\/skills-shortage-hits-qld-mines\/","title":{"rendered":"Skills Shortage Hits Qld Mines"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_306091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-306091\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-306091\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane.jpg 740w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane-340x211.jpg 340w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ianmacfarlane-263x163.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-306091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Kingaroy resident, Queensland Grain Growers Association president and Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane has been chief executive of the QRC since 2016 (Photo: QRC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>September 21, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Queensland Resources Council says the shortage of skilled workers is the number one threat to the future viability of Queensland mining.<\/p>\n<p>QRC chief executive Ian Macfarlane said the QRC&#8217;s latest State of the Sector report showed a combination of COVID-related border restrictions, less skilled migration and interstate competition for workers had created a perfect storm of labour shortages in the resources industry at a time of continued growth across the sector.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Minerals Council of Australia\u2019s latest Commodity Demand Outlook 2030 report had forecast increased demand for key Queensland commodities out to 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is supported by Queensland Treasury\u2019s most recent forward estimates that show coal export volumes are predicted to rise by 23 per cent out to 2024-25,\u201d Mr Macfarlane said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTreasury is also anticipating a broadening of the resources sector due to increasing demand for Queensland\u2019s critical minerals and rare earths used in the production of emerging technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr Macfarlane said mining leaders have become increasingly concerned over the past 12 months about attracting and retaining enough skilled employees to support industry growth, with the issue jumping from number 12 on the list to number one in the latest CEO sentiment survey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of jobs in our sector in Queensland has increased by more than two-thirds over the past five years to reach a record high of almost 85,000 earlier this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis growth in resources jobs, which has surged since COVID, is around six times the relative growth experienced across the rest of Queensland\u2019s workforce over the same five-year period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking forward, jobs growth over the next five years is likely to continue due to increasing global demand for traditional resources like coal, base metals and gas plus the growing demand for new economy minerals such as cobalt, graphite, vanadium and rare earths which are being used to build everything from microchips to electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis demand will create a growing and increasingly diverse pipeline of jobs for Queenslanders, with the National Skills Commission projecting employment in our sector will grow by a further 8 per cent to 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest SEEK employment data, there are currently more than 1300 resources jobs available in Queensland, with more than 70 per cent paying upwards of $100,000 per year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Queensland Resources Council says the shortage of skilled workers is the number one threat to the future viability of mining.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":306091,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[5,3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
