Demolition of the old grandstand at Wondai Showgrounds began this week, the first stage of a major upgrade by the South Burnett Regional Council.<\/p>\n

Tenders for the demolition of the wooden structure, believed to have been built in the early 1900s, were advertised earlier this year.<\/p>\n

At the time, Council said the demolition was necessary as the building was ridden with termites.<\/p>\n

Stage 1 of Council’s upgrade will double the size of the\u00a0pavilion under the grandstand to provide extra storage and display space for the Wondai Show Society and the South Burnett Race Club.<\/p>\n

A new covered walkway, viewing platform and tiered seating are also part of long-term plans for the site.<\/p>\n

The $175,000 cost of the grandstand demolition and pavilion extension is being be funded through a State Government Works For Queensland grant.<\/p>\n
