Visitor Information Centres along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail have been stocked with a trial bird deterrent tape for the magpie breeding season.<\/p>\n

A Somerset Regional Council spokesperson said BVRT users could obtain the tape for free as a trial\u00a0at the\u00a0 Fernvale, Esk and Toogoolawah visitor information centres.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re happy to provide the new holographic tape to BVRT users to assist with deterring magpies and other birds this season,\u201d\u00a0Cr Bob Whalley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarly trials have indicated that swooping birds are deterred by the tape tied to cyclist helmets and may not swoop as close.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Regardless, BVRT users must appreciate that during the breeding season, magpies will swoop, and they can be persistent.”<\/p>\n

If residents experience highly aggressive magpies in the Somerset region, they have been encouraged to report the location by phoning (07) 5424-4000 or\u00a0by email<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Council will be requesting people complete a short survey on their BVRT experience in exchange for the bird deterrent tape, which can be tied like ribbon to bike helmets.<\/p>\n

Quarterly figures released last week show the number of users on the BVRT continues to increase.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Somerset Council has had counters installed at Fernvale and Esk since 2019 and more recently installed one in Lowood.<\/p>\n

Fernvale continues to have the highest use with more than 16,000 users enjoying the BVRT in the last quarter.<\/p>\n

\u201cCouncil has recently completed improvement works in Fernvale and Lowood townships on the BVRT including construction of wide pathways, solar lighting and seating,” Mayor Lehmann said.<\/p>\n

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is looking for experienced and enthusiastic community members to join the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Steering Committee to assist with the future development and success of the trail.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The proposed committee will consist of representatives from the department and councils with four volunteer positions open to the community.<\/p>\n
