{"id":303786,"date":"2021-08-09T12:45:16","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T02:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=303786"},"modified":"2021-08-09T16:54:25","modified_gmt":"2021-08-09T06:54:25","slug":"imported-seeds-pose-major-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2021\/08\/09\/imported-seeds-pose-major-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Imported Seeds Pose Major Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_103668\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103668\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20150421virus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-103668\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20150421virus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20150421virus.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/20150421virus-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus\u00a0was detected in September 2014 in the Northern Territory (Photo: NT DPIF)\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>August 9, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Federal Government biosecurity officers have imported seeds to prove a point &#8230; they can carry very serious vegetable and fruit viruses which could devastate Australian rural industries.<\/p>\n<p>Testing revealed a\u00a0range of vegetable and fruit viruses, demonstrating the significant biosecurity risks that illegal seed imports can pose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeds are the most intercepted biosecurity risk item through the mail,\u201d Australian Chief Plant Protection Officer, Dr Gabrielle Vivian-Smith, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year over 55 thousand intercepted mail articles contained seeds, equating to 72 per cent of the total interceptions for the period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew that seeds could carry a range of biosecurity risks, but through this testing we now know the reality of the risks that we were potentially facing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCucumber, melon and zucchini seeds that were ordered online from overseas were tested for selected viruses that are a biosecurity and agronomic concern.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe viruses that were detected in the seeds include melon necrotic spot virus, cucumber green mottle mosaic virus, squash mosaic virus and potyviruses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne or more of the target viruses were detected in 23 of the 31 seed lots that were tested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese viruses are a significant risk to Australia\u2019s vegetable and fruit industries, as well as backyard gardens, our environment, overall plant health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf these seeds were bought by members of the public and planted, it could have led to some devastating results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome seeds cannot be imported to Australia, as the risk of introducing unwanted plant diseases and serious weed species is too high. Others can, provided you meet strict import conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur work at the border helps manage the risk of illegal seed imports, but everyone has a role to play in following our conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>To better manage biosecurity risks, last year Australia banned imports of cucumber, melon and zucchini seeds, as well as seeds of other high-risk commodities, through international mail and other pathways.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On-arrival in Australia, biosecurity officers check that imported seeds are free from biosecurity risk material and meet all import conditions.
