Members and friends of the Nanango & District Garden Club came from near and far on Wednesday to celebrate its 30th birthday.<\/p>\n

The seed for the idea of a club was planted in June 1991 when a group of like-minded people gathered in Nanango to enjoy friendship and exchange tips and hints about gardening.<\/p>\n

Since then, it has blossomed into one of the largest garden clubs in the area.<\/p>\n

Club president Sylvia Regeling prepared a brief history which was shared at the birthday lunch in Nanango RSL Club’s Taras Hall.<\/p>\n

After that initial get-together, the friends began to meet once a month, each time in a different member’s garden.<\/p>\n

In 1993, it became official and the club was incorporated.<\/p>\n

Over the past 30 years, the Nanango Garden Club has been involved in many activities, including putting floats in the annual Pioneer Festival parade, decorating shops with flowers, and organising guest speakers and many bus trips.<\/p>\n

A highlight of Wednesday’s birthday celebration was the presentation of Life Membership badges to Avis Klinck, Nanango (joined 1999) and Barry Johnston, Caboolture (joined 1993).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lynne Faux, from Garden Clubs of Australia, also presented the club with a Certificate of Achievement.<\/p>\n

Nanango Garden Club vice-president Gloria Kirkness, who accepted the certificate on behalf of the club president, said the 54 members still meet monthly in members’ gardens and go on bus trips.<\/p>\n

Guest speaker at the lunch was well-known Brisbane horticulturalist Claire Bickle, who writes extensively about gardening in magazines and online, and has been featured on radio and TV.<\/p>\n
