{"id":302074,"date":"2021-07-09T16:51:07","date_gmt":"2021-07-09T06:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=302074"},"modified":"2021-07-09T20:48:18","modified_gmt":"2021-07-09T10:48:18","slug":"trc-to-monitor-for-pests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2021\/07\/09\/trc-to-monitor-for-pests\/","title":{"rendered":"TRC To Monitor For Pests"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_271825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-271825\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/timmcmahon1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-271825\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/timmcmahon1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/timmcmahon1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/timmcmahon1-189x300.jpg 189w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-271825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cr Tim McMahon (Photo: TRC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>July 9, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Areas around Googa and Emu creeks near Yarraman and Cooyar have been identified as priority biosecurity surveillance areas by Toowoomba Regional Council.<\/p>\n<p>They are among 14 areas across the Toowoomba region which will be a focus of the TRC&#8217;s\u00a02021-22 Biosecurity Surveillance Program.<\/p>\n<p>Council staff will begin inspecting properties this month for invasive plants and animals.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Tim McMahon said while the entire Toowoomba Regional Council area was included in the surveillance program, Council had identified 14 priority surveillance areas:\u00a0Googa Creek, Emu Creek, Highgrove, Doctor Creek, Mount Darry, Greenwood, Kelvinhaugh, Wainui, Formartin, Wellcamp, Umbiram, Wyreema, Millmerran and Clontarf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 12-month program covers Council\u2019s legislative requirements to monitor compliance with the Biosecurity Act 2014,\u201d Cr McMahon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndividual properties across the region will be selected for compliance monitoring based on the observable presence of invasive biosecurity matter or as a result of a complaint raised with Council.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cA majority of properties, 70 per cent or greater, within the identified priority surveillance localities listed above will be inspected to confirm the presence and extent of invasive biosecurity matter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, all properties that are inspected for this purpose will be monitored for compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil will make every effort to contact a property owner or occupier to gain their permission to enter the site if it\u2019s necessary to inspect the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cr McMahon said all property owners had a legal obligation to take reasonable and practical measures to minimise biosecurity risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Council&#8217;s Biosecurity Plan) seeks to raise public awareness of invasive plants and animals to increase the capacity and willingness of individuals to manage invasive species and participate in their control,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cVoluntary compliance is the desired outcome.
