{"id":299864,"date":"2021-05-27T12:22:23","date_gmt":"2021-05-27T02:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=299864"},"modified":"2021-05-27T12:22:23","modified_gmt":"2021-05-27T02:22:23","slug":"saleyards-changes-a-mess-mp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2021\/05\/27\/saleyards-changes-a-mess-mp\/","title":{"rendered":"Saleyards Changes A Mess: MP"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_75818\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75818\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tonyperrett.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75818\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tonyperrett.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tonyperrett.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/tonyperrett-173x300.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Member for Gympie and Shadow Agriculture Minister Tony Perrett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>May 27, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Changes in tick protocols at cattle saleyards, due to be enforced from June 1, have been described as a &#8220;mess&#8221; by Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett.<\/p>\n<p><strong>southburnett.com.au<\/strong> understands livestock agents first learned about the changes in procedure during a webinar in late April.<\/p>\n<p>They were told they would be phased in within days &#8211; from May 1 &#8211; provoking alarm in some quarters.<\/p>\n<p>The changes mean cattle which have not been pre-treated for ticks will need to be dipped and then held at the saleyard for four days.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, cattle from ticky country heading to abattoirs or feedlots could be dipped at the saleyard and then visually inspected the next day.<\/p>\n<p>The extra holding time at the saleyards means extra costs as well as logistical issues arranging transport after mid-week cattle sales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The changes follow a review of current practices by Biosecurity Queensland, rather than a change in legislation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This review allegedly identified &#8220;inconsistencies&#8221; in risk minimisation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The integrity and management of the tick line is important to all cattle producers,&#8221; Mr Perrett said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact Labor\u2019s Agriculture Minister won\u2019t front up and take responsibility for this mess is shameful, and smacks of arrogance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let\u2019s remember Labor has forced these major administrative changes with no consultation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cattle producers and stock agents were merely told these changes would be imposed on them from May 1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Industry sources have queried the need for the changes, saying there was no evidence of tick outbreaks under the old procedure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Department has previously acknowledged there has been no breaches of biosecurity that has required changes to the administration of stock travelling to controlled entities such as abattoirs and feedlots,&#8221; Mr Perrett said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m calling on the Minister to be open and transparent with livestock producers and confirm if there is any evidence to suggest why he seeks to make these changes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Make no mistake, these administrative changes will further disadvantage Queensland stock agents and producers and are another example of Labor losing control of agriculture in Queensland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington has also queried the changes, lodging a Question on Notice with Agriculture Minister Mark Furner:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>With reference to cattle tick risk minimisation requirements (RMRs). Will the Minister advise:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>(a) During the recent Biosecurity Queensland review, what issues were identified in\u00a0the saleyard system that have prompted changes for saleyards in the tick infested zone,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>(b) When\u00a0consultation began with industry groups and primary producers to notify them of the impending changes,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>(c) Who was consulted, <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>(d) Were the changes strictly implemented May 1, or is there a transition period, and<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>(e) What are the specific changes to the RMR?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr Furner must reply to the Question On Notice by June 11.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Changes in tick protocols at cattle saleyards, due to be enforced from June 1, have been described as a &#8220;mess&#8221; by Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":261136,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
