The much-discussed Bunya Mountains Community Disaster Management Sub-Plan was officially launched on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

Residents gathered at Lyrics Restaurant in Dandabah to be briefed on the plan by representatives from the South Burnett and Western Downs regional councils.<\/p>\n

The boundary between the two regions bisects the Bunya Mountains so both councils worked on development of the plan.<\/p>\n

It was launched following a final review from the Bunya Mountains Community Association Inc (BMCAI).<\/p>\n

The Sub-Plan describes the process, response steps and responsibilities should a disaster – such as a bushfire – arise on the mountains.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Residents gathered in small groups to discuss the document, which will be available to download from both councils’ websites.<\/p>\n

The pressure to develop an emergency plan followed a bushfire at the base of the Bunya Mountains in 2019.<\/p>\n

The fire burned close to the boundaries of Russell Park on the Dalby side of the mountains.\u00a0<\/p>\n

National Parks and Wildlife Service personnel joined with local rural brigades from the Bunya Mountains and the Toowoomba region to battle the blaze, which burned for days.<\/p>\n

Residents feared the fire could have spread into Russell Park and then up the mountain, threatening homes as well as the National Park.<\/p>\n

BMCAI and\u00a0 the Bunya Mountains Rural Fire Brigade sought advice from the two councils and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services in regards to what would happen should the community be threatened by another bushfire or disaster.<\/p>\n

Multiple consultation meetings followed which culminated in Saturday’s event.<\/p>\n

The launch was followed by a family fun day on the lawns in front of the restaurant.<\/p>\n
