People with asbestos-related diseases \u2013 and their carers \u2013 have been invited to attend a free morning tea at Kingaroy RSL Club next week.<\/p>\n

The Asbestos Disease Support Society is hosting the morning tea in conjunction with Brisbane-based Turner Freeman Lawyers.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an opportunity for people who have an asbestos-related disease, their families and carers \u2013 and people who have cared for someone in the past \u2013 to get together, chat and share experiences.<\/p>\n

There will also be information available about various asbestos diseases and the supports available.<\/p>\n

The morning tea will be held from 10:00am to 11:30am on Wednesday, May 5.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Asbestos-related diseases can range from mild lung damage to aggressive cancers such as mesothelioma.<\/p>\n

When asbestos fibres are breathed in, they can lodge in lung tissue, causing inflammation and scarring. Serious diseases often take many years, if not decades, to develop.<\/p>\n

Asbestos is ubiquitous in Australian homes and workplaces.<\/p>\n

It can be found in multiple places including flat and corrugated wall and roof sheets, gutters, ridge caps, eaves, ceilings,\u00a0splashbacks, vinyl floor tiles,\u00a0underlay sheeting, electrical meter boards, old ironing-board covers, heatproof mats, wood heater insulation, brake and clutch linings, filters and adhesive products, and hot-water pipe insulation.<\/p>\n

In fact, there are more than 3000 known products that contain asbestos.<\/p>\n

The use of asbestos in building materials in Australia stopped in the 1980s but the\u00a0use of all asbestos products was not banned until 2004.<\/p>\n

There is another change happening soon in regards to asbestos regulations in Queensland.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Low density asbestos fibre board (LDB) will be classed as a friable from May 1.<\/p>\n

LDB is a lightly compressed board which looks like cement sheeting or plasterboard but crumbles easily (friable) and can release asbestos fibres into the air.<\/p>\n

A Class A licensed asbestos removalist must be engaged to remove LDB from a property.<\/p>\n
