{"id":297353,"date":"2021-04-15T19:31:28","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T09:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=297353"},"modified":"2021-04-15T19:39:50","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T09:39:50","slug":"rabbit-numbers-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2021\/04\/15\/rabbit-numbers-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Rabbit Numbers On The Rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_278446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-278446\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-278446\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/scotthenschen1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"290\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-278446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Natural Resources portfolio chair Cr Scott Henschen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>April 15, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rabbit numbers seem to be increasing across the South Burnett, but traps and calicivirus are still proven ways to control the problem.<\/p>\n<p>At Wednesday&#8217;s Communities standing committee meeting, Natural Resources portfolio chair Cr Scott Henschen said he had heard several reports that rabbit numbers seemed to be higher this year.<\/p>\n<p>But in response to a question from Cr Kathy Duff about what residents should do if they detected rabbits on their property, Cr Henschen said the best approach was to contact Council.<\/p>\n<p>The SBRC has rabbit traps available for loan and staff can also supply carrots laced with calicivirus, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Both strategies were proven ways to control rabbit infestations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cr Kirstie Schumacher asked if the recent discovery of the African Olive pest plant in the Toowoomba area posed any immediate risk to the South Burnett.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cr Henschen said he did not believe it did, but Council officers were monitoring the situation.<\/p>\n<p>However, Drooping Tree Pear &#8211; which has begun to appear along some waterways in the Boondooma area &#8211; was of greater concern because little seemed to be known about it at present.<\/p>\n<p>So was Fall Armyworm, which could cause significant crop losses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cr Henschen said he understood a workshop on strategies to combat Fall Armyworm would be held in the region in the near future.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Communities General Manager Peter O&#8217;May said it was normal practice for the Council&#8217;s Natural Resources staff to liaise with their counterparts in Cherbourg, Gympie and Toowoomba councils about potential environmental threats.<\/p>\n<p>This helped when the South Burnett undertook joint projects with them, such as a recent joint program with Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council which treated Parthenium and Honey Locust along a stretch of Barambah Creek.<\/p>\n<p>It also helped foster knowledge-sharing between neighbouring councils, which strengthened their biosecurity systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rabbit numbers seem to be increasing across the South Burnett, but traps and calicivirus are still proven ways to control the problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":278447,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22,3,36],"tags":[1131,1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
