The 2020 South Burnett Rugby League was predicted to be the best for years … that is until COVID-19 wrecked every carefully laid plan.<\/p>\n

So it is with caution we report the 2021 season is looking pretty good!<\/p>\n

A highlight is sure to be the InTrust Super Cup game to be played at Murgon on July 17 as part of the Queensland Rugby League’s “country round”.<\/p>\n

This will coincide with the official opening of the new dressing sheds at Murgon Showground.<\/p>\n

The Stanwell 9s competition will also be returning, to be played on May 15 at Murgon.<\/p>\n

This DV Awareness round will be run in partnership with the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation and will also feature a special game between a Queensland Police rep side and a Frank Fisher Invitational team.<\/p>\n

Murgon Mustangs president Scott Prendergast said the 2021 South Burnett senior season would kick off on March 20, however the draw has not yet be finalised.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In juniors, Under 6s to Under 14s will be played locally from March 20.<\/p>\n

Under 15s, Under 16s and Under 18s will play as South Burnett Eagles in the Toowoomba Junior Rugby League competition.<\/p>\n

Women’s teams will also be playing in the Toowoomba competition, but are still chasing numbers in U13s, U15s and U17s.<\/p>\n

League lovers are obviously hungry for action.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A good crowd gathered at T.J. O’Neill Oval in Kingaroy last weekend to enjoy three trial games: the Wide Bay Bulls took on the Western Mustangs in Under 18s, Under 16s and Open Women’s games.<\/p>\n

South Burnett had a strong representation in the Bulls: Matthew Springate, Chris Kerkow and Cody Gale in Under 18s; Kevin Georgetown, Joseph Meikle, Fletch Prendergast, Chill Pidgeon, Jayden Tewes-Smallwood, Jamahl Turner-Smallwood and Tyrell Hopkins in Under 16s; and Traevonnah Fisher, Brenna Prendergast, Rashida Scott and Aimee Barron in the women’s game.<\/p>\n

Despite the hometown support, the Mustangs proved too strong in all three grades but that wasn’t really the point … rugby league was back!<\/p>\n
