Wondai’s 135 Army Cadet Unit threw open its doors on Sunday to give young people a chance to experience what it would be like to be an army cadet.<\/p>\n

The open day was held at the\u00a025\/49 RQR Depot in Bramston Street, a large area which includes training rooms surrounded by bushland.<\/p>\n

Lieutenant (AAC) Lynda Jones, the commanding officer of the unit, said cadets learn about about setting up a bush camp (including hexamine stoves and hoochies), navigation, tying knots, communication, concealment and lots, lots more.<\/p>\n

The unit is also in the midst of setting up a drum corps and is now also a recognised first aid trainer.<\/p>\n

Young people – girls and boys – aged from 13 to 18 can join up.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are usually four bush camps held every year as well as an annual camp. The cadets also take part in ceremonial events such as Anzac Day and Australia Day.<\/p>\n

Lt Jones said that when cadets turn 18 they are encouraged to join the Army Reserve.<\/p>\n

The 135 ACU currently has 19 members but there were at least six more potential recruits who showed interest on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Current members come from a wide area … from as far away as Gayndah and Goomeri to Murgon, Wondai and Proston.<\/p>\n

They meet every second Sunday from 9:00am to 4:00pm.<\/p>\n

The unit will be holding a sign-on day on February 28.<\/p>\n
