It was cut back to two days – and rain brought the competition to an early end – but both riders and spectators still had heaps of fun at the Kumbia Campdraft at the weekend.<\/p>\n

Campdraft secretary Leanne Petersen said 219 nominations were received and more than 700 runs were made on Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

Winner of the Open Draft was Daniel Richards and the highest cutout was recorded by Jon Templeton, from Goodger.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately rain cut short the Novice draft on Sunday afternoon after the first round. The top scorers in this were named the winners.<\/p>\n

Leanne said the campdraft had to be reduced to two days because of the difficulty sourcing cattle and road transport issues caused by load restrictions on the Stuart River Bridge.<\/p>\n

But there was no lack of riders.<\/p>\n

“We had over 200 people on the waiting list; we were turning people away,” she said.<\/p>\n

Sponsorship – which usually comes from South Burnett and Dalby businesses – was down as a direct result of the floods.<\/p>\n

“Businesses are doing it tough,” Leanne said. “People who would usually be able to donate $100 could only manage $50.”<\/p>\n

But despite these difficulties, the organisers were determined that the campdraft go ahead and a lot of local riders turned up.<\/p>\n

“Many of their properties had copped severe damage, and they were flat out making repairs, but they said we really need this for the community,” Leanne said.<\/p>\n

“They needed to see each other, have a beer and a chat with their mates.”<\/p>\n

The campdraft also attracted volunteers to help out who aren’t in the cattle industry or have horses.<\/p>\n

“People just wanted to help,” Leanne said. “There were also travellers, people staying in the caravan park, who came over on Friday to help, which was really marvellous.”<\/p>\n
