Children have been invited to head to Kingaroy’s Memorial Park on Sunday for a chance to meet Australian beach volleyball champion Taliqua Clancy and have some fun in the park.<\/p>\n

The get-together, dubbed “Discovering The Heart Of Christmas”, began as a project to connect 15 Indigenous kindergarten children in Brisbane with 15 children from Kingaroy.<\/p>\n

The children became penpals and will exchange Christmas gifts on the day.<\/p>\n

However, other children have now been invited to come along to join in the fun, games and art activities that are being planned for Sunday.<\/p>\n

Taliqua grew up and went to school in Kingaroy and is the granddaughter of well-known local residents Robert and Jocelyn Clancy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n

Last year, she and partner Mariafe Artacho del Solar won bronze at the World Championships in Germany \u2013 the first medal Australians have won in the competition for 16 years,<\/p>\n

Taliqua had been aiming to compete at this year’s Tokyo Olympics – and has even been featured on a $1 Olympic coin released by the Australian Mint – but that hope was postponed by the pandemic.<\/p>\n

She is now training to be in top form when the COVID-delayed Olympics are held in 2021.<\/p>\n

The cultural event aims to celebrate community and togetherness.<\/p>\n

Local artist and educator Toni Philips-Petersen will lead cultural games for the children.<\/p>\n

The \u201cAcknowledgement To Country\u201d will be performed by five-year-olds from Gundoo Early Childhood Centre in Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

Taliqua\u2019s long-time mentor, Olympic gold medallist Natalie Cook will also be taking part in the event.<\/p>\n

The “Discovering The Heart Of Christmas” event will run for 10:00am to noon at Memorial Park.<\/p>\n
