{"id":284016,"date":"2020-11-09T18:18:17","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T08:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=284016"},"modified":"2020-11-09T21:50:30","modified_gmt":"2020-11-09T11:50:30","slug":"fish-packed-not-made-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/11\/09\/fish-packed-not-made-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Fish &#8216;Packed&#8217; Not &#8216;Made In Australia&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_284017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-284017\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/crumbedfish.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-284017 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/crumbedfish.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-284017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Birds Eye crumbed fish &#8230;\u00a0slicing, crumbing and par-frying isn&#8217;t enough to justify a &#8220;Made In Australia&#8221; mark, the ACCC has ruled<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>November 9, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Country of origin labelling on 31 popular frozen fish products will be changed from &#8220;Made in Australia&#8221; to &#8220;Packed in Australia&#8221; following concerns raised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The frozen fish products were sold under the brand names of Birds Eye, I&amp;J, Neptune and one home brand product.<\/p>\n<p>Following compliance checks across a range of frozen foods, the ACCC was concerned the products displayed a &#8220;Made in Australia&#8221; mark when the imported frozen fish may not have been &#8220;substantially transformed&#8221; in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Australian Consumer Law, if a food product is packed in Australia without being substantially transformed, it cannot display a &#8220;Made in Australia&#8221; mark.<\/p>\n<p>The products used fish imported from a number of countries including New Zealand, the United States and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The ACCC\u2019s view was that only minor manufacturing processes had occurred in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simplot Australia Pty Ltd claimed that slicing, crumbing and par-frying of the frozen fish constituted substantial transformation, justifying the use of the &#8220;Made in Australia&#8221; mark.\u00a0 However, after the ACCC raised its concerns, the company agreed to change its country of origin labelling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Simplot is a wholly owned subsidiary of the United States-based company J.R. Simplot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProcesses that only change the form or appearance of imported ingredients or components no longer qualify as substantial transformation,\u201d ACCC Deputy Chair Mick Keogh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCountry of origin labels are designed to inform consumers, some of whom may be willing to pay a premium for products they think are made in a particular country, especially Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only can incorrect labelling wrongly influence consumers into purchasing a certain product, it can also give a competitive advantage to those who use the \u2018Made in Australia\u2019 label in breach of the Australian Consumer Law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased that Simplot co-operated with the ACCC investigation and agreed to make changes to its labelling, and on this basis we decided to resolve this matter administratively without taking enforcement action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All Simplot frozen fish products manufactured after October 31 will have the &#8220;Packed in Australia&#8221; mark but products with the &#8220;Made in Australia&#8221; mark may still be available in stores until sold out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Country of origin labelling on 31 popular frozen fish products will be changed from &#8220;Made in Australia&#8221; to &#8220;Packed in Australia&#8221; following concerns raised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":284017,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[5,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
