COVID-19 put a stop to this year’s Relay For Life at Kingaroy Showgrounds, but it couldn’t stop a bunch of keen Year 6 students at Taabinga State School on Friday.<\/p>\n

The students organised their own mini-Relay complete with music, a Relay tent and lots of purple.<\/p>\n

The afternoon was a “captain’s project” thought up by school vice-captain Gabby Wamsley.<\/p>\n

The students did laps of the school oval and were presented with coloured beads for every lap they completed.<\/p>\n

All the students in Year 6 took part between 2:00pm and 3:00pm, and those with permission slips continued on until 4:00pm.<\/p>\n

It was the second Relay For Life fundraiser organised by Gabby this week.<\/p>\n

After growing her hair for months, she was sponsored to have it cut short.<\/p>\n

This happened on Thursday, with Gabby raising about $200 for Relay.<\/p>\n

All up, the students hope to raise about $500 from their efforts for this year’s South Burnett Relay For Life.<\/p>\n

It’s a far cry from the $7000 that Taabinga students raised at last year’s Relay but they are all pleased they could still contribute something during this pandemic year.<\/p>\n

The annual Dinner With The Captains Relay For Life fundraiser was another victim of COVID-19 this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the popular auction on sporting memorabilia is still going ahead.<\/p>\n

An “On-Air Auction With The Captains” will be held on CROW FM 90.7 on Friday, November 27, sponsored by the Telstra Store Kingaroy, with all funds raised going to Relay For Life.<\/p>\n
