A new teaching space which aims to give hairdressing students a genuine salon-like experience was officially opened at the Nurunderi TAFE campus at Cherbourg on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

Campus co-ordinator Sharon Sippel said the new salon offered a larger space for the students, but also more flexibility for TAFE.<\/p>\n

Beauty and massage courses could also be offered in the area in future.<\/p>\n

The new space includes two basins and two professional hairdressing chairs.<\/p>\n

Sharon said she would like to thank Cherbourg Council – and in particular Economic and Community Development Manager Sean Nicholson – who had been very supportive of the project.<\/p>\n

QBuild did the actual construction work.<\/p>\n

Sharon said the new salon had been a project envisaged by the former campus co-ordinator, Santina Schmocker, who died suddenly in June this year.<\/p>\n

She was pleased to have brought the project to fruition.<\/p>\n

“It was something that Santina was working towards. Santina was an amazing woman and very passionate about this campus and the students.”<\/p>\n

A memorial rose garden for Santina has been created at the entrance to the campus.<\/p>\n

Nurunderi is currently surveying residents in the South and North Burnett to see what courses they would be interested in learning at the Cherbourg campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A survey form has been distributed by email and during local events (and can be downloaded, below).<\/p>\n

Sharon said initial feedback suggested interest in massage courses and small motor repairs.<\/p>\n

She said a “community yarn” for Cherbourg residents had also been held in Nurunderi’s theatre room last week to gather more ideas.<\/p>\n

Sharon said the TAFE was interested in providing “community-driven” courses but was also keen to work with local businesses to provide what they needed for their training purposes.<\/p>\n
