Former Federal MP John McVeigh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

October 8, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n

The date has been announced for the by-election for the Federal seat of Groom, caused by the\u00a0resignation of the John McVeigh.<\/p>\n

Speaker Tony Smith told Federal Parliament on Thursday that the polling day will be Saturday, November 28.<\/p>\n

Rolls will close on Monday, November 2, and nominations on November 5.<\/p>\n

Dr McVeigh announced his resignation, effective immediately, on September 18.<\/p>\n

The former State Agriculture Minister swapped to Federal politics and was elected to the Toowoomba-based seat in 2016.<\/p>\n

Before entering State politics, Dr McVeigh served as a councillor on Toowoomba Regional Council from 2008-12.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his resignation letter, Dr McVeigh said he was leaving Federal Parliament to spend more time with his wife Anita, who has been ill.<\/p>\n

He has since taken up a position in Toowoomba as executive director at the Institute for Resilient Regions at the University of Southern Queensland.<\/p>\n
