Member for Groom John McVeigh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Member for Groom John McVeigh announced on Friday morning he is resigning from Federal Parliament, effective immediately.<\/p>\n

The former State Agriculture Minister swapped to Federal politics and was elected to the Toowoomba-based seat in 2016.<\/p>\n

During his time in Canberra, Dr McVeigh served on a number of Parliamentary Committees.<\/p>\n

He was Chair of the Public Works Committee as well as a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade; the Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit; and the Standing Committees on Industry, Innovation Science and Resources; and Agriculture and Water Resources.<\/p>\n

He also chaired the Coalition\u2019s Policy Committee for Industry, Innovation, Science and Northern Australia and the Federal Government\u2019s Select Committee on Regional Development and Decentralisation.<\/p>\n

Before entering State politics, Dr McVeigh served as a councillor on Toowoomba Regional Council from 2008-12.<\/p>\n

In his resignation letter, delivered to Speaker Tony Smith, Dr McVeigh said he was resigning to spend more time with his wife Anita, who has been ill.<\/p>\n

The Speaker is now considering possible dates for the Groom by-election.<\/p>\n
