Eight new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported in Queensland on Wednesday – the largest daily number since the latest cluster began in mid-August.<\/p>\n

Most of the new cases were detected in quarantine as they are household contacts of previously confirmed cases.<\/p>\n

Five of the cases are from the same family and relate to the cluster at the Queensland Corrections Training Academy.<\/p>\n

The other three cases are linked to a cluster at the Ipswich Hospital, including two healthcare workers already in quarantine and one of their children, a student at St Edmund\u2019s College, Ipswich.<\/p>\n

Queensland Health said the risk at the school was considered low due to the student\u2019s limited time there before being diagnosed. The school will reopen after undergoing a deep clean.<\/p>\n

Thursday’s tally brings the total number of confirmed cases associated with the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre and Training Academy cluster to 43.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This includes seven staff from Ipswich Hospital.<\/p>\n

“I want to assure Queenslanders that although that number is our highest daily tally for some time, each of those people diagnosed is related to existing cases,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.<\/p>\n

“This is not a time for alarm, this is a time for thanks that our testing system is so professional and Queenslanders are so vigilant, and that we’ve had remarkable success in containing this virus.”<\/p>\n

There are currently 29 active cases in Queensland, including 10 people in hospital.<\/p>\n

The active cases are being handled by the West Moreton (17 cases), Sunshine Coast (1), Metro South (6), Gold Coast (3) and Children’s Health (2) Hospital and Health Service regions.<\/p>\n

There are no active cases in the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service Region, which includes the South Burnett.<\/p>\n
