{"id":274665,"date":"2020-09-03T18:42:39","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T08:42:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=274665"},"modified":"2020-09-03T18:43:39","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T08:43:39","slug":"covid-19-figures-promising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/09\/03\/covid-19-figures-promising\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Figures &#8216;Promising&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_151703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151703\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/steven-miles-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-151703\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/steven-miles-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/steven-miles-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/steven-miles-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-151703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deputy Premier and Health Minister Dr Steven Miles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>September 3, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two new cases of COVID-19 in Queensland were confirmed by Health Minister Dr Steven Miles on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Miles said the two cases &#8211; a man and a woman aged between 30-39 years &#8211; were linked, and were also believed to be connected to the Youth Detention Centre \/ Corrections Training Academy cluster &#8211; although that was still being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>One of the new cases works at the Karinya Place aged care home at Laidley.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said the risk at the facility was low as the infected person did not work directly with residents.<\/p>\n<p>Residents and staff at the facility are now undergoing testing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is now close to two weeks since that first case was reported at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre,&#8221; Dr Miles said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We continue to see small numbers of cases generally amongst those who&#8217;ve had contact with other confirmed cases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And that&#8217;s really promising. It suggests that our efforts &#8211; that our rapid response &#8211; is working.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are now 30 active cases in Queensland, including 18 people in hospital; 14,273 tests were carried out during the past 24 hours.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Viral fragments of COVID-19 have been detected in a sample from the Cannonvale-Airlie Beach sewage treatment plant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sample was taken as part of a joint Queensland Health, University of Queensland and CSIRO pilot research program.<\/p>\n<p>Sampling has been taking place at several locations across Queensland since mid-July: in Brisbane,\u00a0Ipswich,\u00a0Logan, the Gold Coast,\u00a0Sunshine Coast,\u00a0Hervey Bay,\u00a0Mackay,\u00a0Cannonvale-Airlie Beach, Townsville and\u00a0Cairns.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Young said the surveillance program was just one part of a wider response to COVID-19 and the positive sample should be of no concern to the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut just to put everyone\u2019s minds at ease, we have stood up a pop-up testing clinic at the Airlie Beach Lagoon carpark until Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If anyone has COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, they should go and get tested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA positive sewage result meant that someone who has been infected was shedding the virus. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Infected people can shed viral fragments and that shedding can happen for several weeks after the person is no longer infectious.
