Kingaroy’s QCWA branch – the oldest in the State – celebrated its 98th birthday on Saturday morning in an unusual but tasty way.<\/p>\n

The branch was founded 11 days after the QCWA formed on August 11, 1922, and to mark the occasion branch members got busy in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Guests who came along to the group’s Kingaroy Street rooms got to enjoy tea, coffee and their choice of six different types of scones, ranging from date scones and pumpkin scones to sweet chocolate and savoury varieties.<\/p>\n

Guests could also buy some of the quirky but charming craft works on display, all of them prepared by members at the group’s regular craft mornings, or buy raffle tickets for the chance of winning a fresh fruit platter from Andersson’s Fruit Market.<\/p>\n

Branch president Lois Thurecht said the QCWA rooms were very heavily used.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apart from hosting monthly branch meetings, craft mornings and special functions, the rooms are also the headquarters of the town’s Twilight branch.<\/p>\n

The Twilight branch was set up in 2013 to cater to working women who wanted to be involved in the QCWA but were unable to attend daytime get-togethers.<\/p>\n

Seven years later, what started as an experiment to cater to society’s changing demographics is still going strong.<\/p>\n

The scone morning was a relaxed affair, although guests had to sign in to comply with COVID restrictions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They then sat down to scones, jam and cream at tables spread out around the main meeting room to chat with friends.<\/p>\n

A special guest was Kingaroy resident Gabrielle Burke who had come out that morning to celebrate her own birthday.<\/p>\n

She was invited by the branch to cut its 98th Anniversary birthday cake.<\/p>\n
