{"id":262545,"date":"2020-07-01T15:42:54","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T05:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=262545"},"modified":"2020-07-01T15:42:54","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T05:42:54","slug":"gm-refuses-plea-from-dealers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/07\/01\/gm-refuses-plea-from-dealers\/","title":{"rendered":"GM Refuses Plea From Dealers"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_262547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-262547\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-262547\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden.jpg 740w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden-340x211.jpg 340w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/20200701holden-263x163.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-262547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Holden lion has been a part of Australian automotive history for almost 100 years &#8230; but no more<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>July 1, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>General Motors has refused a request to extend its deadline for Holden dealers, forcing businesses across Australia to accept &#8220;grossly unfair&#8221; compensation, according to the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(The GM) deadline to its dealers to sign up for its compensation offer has arrived today (July 1) and many Australian businesses have been left with no choice but to reluctantly accept the unfavourable terms put to them,&#8221; a statement from AADA CEO\u00a0James Voortman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;GM flat out refused a Federal Government request to extend the deadline and refused to participate in arbitration with its dealers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr\u00a0Voortman said that over the past four months, 184 Holden dealers have remained united in their opposition &#8220;to the grossly inadequate offer of compensation from GM&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ultimately, GM\u2019s complete unwillingness to negotiate and the prospect of a costly and lengthy court battle has had the desired effect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;GM has annual revenues of $200 billion and the prospect of fighting them in court was just not an option for many of the dumped Holden dealers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGM\u2019s actions saw both sides of politics combine to launch a Senate Inquiry, it has led to the ACCC pressuring them into mediation and has drawn pleas from Federal Ministers for them to negotiate in good faith.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAt every turn, GM has thumbed its nose at local dealers, the Australian Government and by extension the Australian public, the same public which provided the company with more than $2 billion in taxpayer-funded assistance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has set a dangerous precedent and Australia urgently needs to strengthen its automotive franchising regulations to protect local businesses against the heavy-handed behaviour of some car manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we do not act this will happen again. The choice is clear. Do we want laws which ensure local Australian dealers are treated fairly or do we want laws that allow offshore Fortune 100 car companies to treat these local businesses and their employees with disdain?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAADA will continue to advocate for urgent changes to automotive franchising regulations but we will also try and ensure that GM is called to account in the coming Senate Inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGM\u2019s senior management needs to front up to the Senate Inquiry and answer a range of questions, such as when they first knew that Holden would be withdrawn, why they misled dealers and consumers about their commitment to Australia, why they refused fair compensation to dealers and the details of its new General Motors Specialty Vehicles business.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>General Motors has refused a request to extend its deadline for Holden dealers, forcing businesses across Australia to accept &#8220;grossly unfair&#8221; compensation, according to the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":262547,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[5,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
