The cancellation of this year’s Wine and Food in the Park Festival didn’t put a dampener on the big Meandu Mine reunion which had been planned to coincide with the event.<\/p>\n

Instead of hosting the reunion in a marquee in Memorial Park, the organisers shifted the event to Kingaroy’s Carrollee Hotel … and no-one seemed to mind.<\/p>\n

“In fact, this may be even better, we have it all to ourselves!” said organiser Laura Langan, from Rio Tinto.<\/p>\n

A room at the hotel was set aside for a display of photographs from throughout the past 30 years.<\/p>\n

Visitors browsed the photo boards and flipped through photo albums.<\/p>\n

Former employees – especially from the Rio Tinto years – and their partners dropped in and out of the reunion all day, swapping stories and reminiscing.<\/p>\n

Many had travelled from Brisbane or Central Queensland to attend.<\/p>\n

Work first began on Meandu Mine in 1978 after the State Government decided to proceed with the construction of the adjacent Tarong Power Station.<\/p>\n

The mine was commissioned in 1983 and began regular coal deliveries to the power station via conveyor belt in 1984.<\/p>\n
