{"id":257789,"date":"2020-05-08T16:41:56","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T06:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=257789"},"modified":"2020-07-11T10:11:14","modified_gmt":"2020-07-11T00:11:14","slug":"council-writes-off-310000-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/05\/08\/council-writes-off-310000-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Writes Off $310,000 Debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_238153\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-238153\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-238153\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/council1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/council1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/council1-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/council1-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/council1-285x177.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-238153\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The South Burnett Regional Council will write off $310,000 in unpaid rates and charges after a property auction last November failed to recoup the full amount owing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>May 8, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett Regional Council has voted to write off more than $310,000 in unpaid rates and charges after auctioning 17 properties last November.<\/p>\n<p>At April&#8217;s council meeting, officers said rates staff had issued final notices in December 2018 to the owners of properties which had three or more years of overdue rates owing.<\/p>\n<p>Those notices requested each owner either pay their outstanding rates in full, or enter an approved repayment arrangement with Council before the end of February 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Councillors then voted at their March 2019 meeting to issue formal Notices of Intention to Sell to 36 owners who had failed to respond.<\/p>\n<p>These final notices &#8211; posted on April 30 &#8211; warned property owners they had a maximum period of six months to pay their rates in full or Council would sell their property at public auction.<\/p>\n<p>This resulted in 19 of the 36 properties settling their outstanding rates debt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The remaining 17 properties were put up for sale at a public auction held at Kingaroy Town Hall&#8217;s supper room on November 19.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Officers told the meeting the properties were offered at current market value &#8211; which was generally lower than the unimproved\/site valuation provided by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy &#8211; and about 30 bidders registered for the auction.<\/p>\n<p>However, bids failed to reach the reserve prices.<\/p>\n<p>Council then negotiated with the highest bidder, which resulted in higher offers being received for 15 of the 17 unsold properties.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining two properties were passed in and Council automatically became their new owner.<\/p>\n<p>At last week&#8217;s meeting, Councillors resolved unanimously to write off $308,298 in unpaid rates and interest charges, plus $2250 in unpaid overgrown allotment charges that were not cleared by the proceeds of the auction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mayor Brett Otto noted the recovery action had been started by the previous Council and had recouped $288,568 in outstanding rates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further, the 15 properties that had been sold &#8211; which were located in Kingaroy&#8217;s Oasis Estate and were formerly owned by one developer &#8211; were now owned by 15 individuals and generating rates revenue for Council.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Had Council not moved on this then $288,568 would not have been recovered,&#8221; the Mayor said.<\/p>\n<p>He also said while the November auction may not have achieved everything that was hoped, he believed it was still a much better result than if the auction had been held in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>Officers said the outcome did not affect Council\u2019s overall bank account.<\/p>\n<p>However, it would lower the amount of revenue reported on the income statement, and this would have implications for the Council&#8217;s 2020-21 Budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The South Burnett Regional Council has voted to write off more than $310,000 in unpaid rates and charges after auctioning 17 properties last November. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":238153,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[22,3],"tags":[1131],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
