{"id":257438,"date":"2020-04-29T19:57:18","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T09:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=257438"},"modified":"2020-04-29T19:59:12","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T09:59:12","slug":"premier-clarifies-farm-work-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/04\/29\/premier-clarifies-farm-work-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Premier Clarifies Farm Work Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_176862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176862\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/palaszczuk-200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176862\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/palaszczuk-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/palaszczuk-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/palaszczuk-200-172x300.jpg 172w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk (Photo: Twitter)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>April 29, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has assured growers they can maintain a seasonal workforce while meeting their COVID-19 public health obligations.<\/p>\n<p>She said the industry needed clarity about managing an incoming workforce, particularly backpackers, at an important time of year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone needs fresh fruit and vegetables to stay healthy during this time, and much of Australia\u2019s produce is grown right here,\u201d Ms Palaszczuk said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo harvest these crops our horticulture industry has an average monthly workforce demand of up to 10,000 skilled and unskilled workers over the next six months, but COVID-19 restrictions must also be followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we have a clear message to agricultural employers and workers about what they need to do, especially if they come from a coronavirus hot spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Any seasonal worker coming to Queensland would need a border pass and details of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where they had been for the previous two weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Written confirmation of a job in Queensland, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Where they planned to reside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If they have come from a declared COVID-19 hotspot, they must also self-quarantine for 14 days at their own or employer\u2019s expense before starting their employment.<\/p>\n<p>The State Government will also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Promote the importance of complying with health obligations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Insist on mandatory health management plans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Strengthen compliance, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure local solutions for local circumstances are developed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Agriculture Minister Mark Furner said the Wide Bay-Burnett, Cairns and Moreton Bay North would have the highest demand for harvest workers, followed by Darling Downs-Maranoa and Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring this process we need to keep everybody safe, and we all have an obligation for taking actions that prevent the spread of COVID-19,\u201d Mr Furner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means everybody involved in the agricultural employment and supply chain \u2014 workers, transporters, accommodation providers, employers, labour hire companies and local communities \u2014 are responsible for ensuring proper arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur plan will facilitate the movement of agricultural labourers while ensuring health and safety for them and our regional communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgricultural seasonal worker employers, transporters and accommodation providers must have a health management plan in place. Employers must comply with stringent record keeping on the health status of their workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Furner said agricultural production was a key pillar of the Queensland economy and was always going to be vital in managing the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why we moved quickly to declare agriculture an essential industry.
