{"id":256652,"date":"2020-04-14T13:15:48","date_gmt":"2020-04-14T03:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=256652"},"modified":"2020-06-24T20:22:16","modified_gmt":"2020-06-24T10:22:16","slug":"older-drivers-told-to-stay-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/04\/14\/older-drivers-told-to-stay-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Older Drivers Told To Stay Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>April 14, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Drivers aged 75 and over will no longer have to visit their doctor or optometrist for a medical certificate to keep their licences &#8211; at least until the COVID-19 crisis ends.<\/p>\n<p>The change is part of the push to ensure older\u00a0Queenslanders stay safely at home.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Minister Mark Bailey said doctors and optometrists have reported that older Queenslanders have been leaving their homes to renew their medical certificate when they should be limiting travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe health advice has been clear: Stay at home,\u201d Minister Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regulatory changes have been made to do two things in response to COVID-19:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Medical certificates that were obtained to meet the senior driver requirements, that expired after January 29, 2020, will be considered valid until six months after the COVID-19 emergency ends; and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>During this emergency period, senior drivers will not be committing an offence if they drive while not holding a valid medical certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These changes come into effect on Friday (April 10).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These changes will help to reduce the risk of virus exposure senior Queensland drivers would face when visiting a clinic and taking medical exams.
