Toowoomba Regional Council will begin automating CBD pedestrian crossings as soon as possible to help limit the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n

The measure follows discussions between the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Council around the need to minimise unnecessary surface contact at pedestrian crossings.<\/p>\n

General Manager of Infrastructure Services Mike Brady said traffic lights would become automated at key CBD locations in Toowoomba.<\/p>\n

Pedestrian crossing buttons would not need to be pressed between 6:00am and 6:00pm.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are programming lights at major intersections to automatically transition between traffic and pedestrian access,\u201d Mr Brady said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn total, all 19 signalised intersections within the area bound by Clifford, Herries, Neil and Russell streets and the signals on Anzac Avenue at Clifford Gardens will be automated.<\/p>\n

\u201cPedestrian buttons at these locations will not need to be pressed between 6:00am and 6:00pm to cross the road safely.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you need to visit these areas during these hours, please don\u2019t press the button \u2013 just wait for the green signal to cross.<\/p>\n

\u201cSignage explaining the new measure is being installed at traffic lights this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cOutside these hours, and for other pedestrian crossings, please use your elbow to press the button.<\/strong><\/p>\n
