{"id":255554,"date":"2020-03-24T18:34:52","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T08:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=255554"},"modified":"2020-09-18T10:33:14","modified_gmt":"2020-09-18T00:33:14","slug":"ato-offers-covid-19-tax-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2020\/03\/24\/ato-offers-covid-19-tax-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"ATO Offers COVID-19 Tax Advice"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_255562\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-255562\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/chrisjordan11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-255562 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/chrisjordan11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/chrisjordan11.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/chrisjordan11-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/chrisjordan11-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-255562\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Commissioner of Taxation Chris Jordan (Photo: ATO)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong> March 24, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Australian Taxation Office has updated its website with essential information about tax and superannuation changes that have become law following the passage of the Federal Government\u2019s Economic Support Package.<\/p>\n<p>The website is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ato.gov.au\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ato.gov.au\/coronavirus<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Taxation Commissioner Chris Jordan said many people were being heavily affected by the challenging economic conditions created by the outbreak of COVID-19 and the ATO was standing by ready to help where it could.<\/p>\n<p>He said the ATO\u2019s coronavirus page provided information about what people need to know, or do, to get access to the tax or superannuation measures announced by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>These measures include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Giving individuals early access to their superannuation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Providing cash flow assistance for employers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing the instant asset write-off, making more businesses eligible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Backing business investment by accelerating depreciation deductions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEach of the measures have different timings, eligibility, and processes. Some will be applied automatically and others will require an application, so I recommend heading to ato.gov.au\/coronavirus to understand what is possible,\u201d Mr Jordan said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jordan also reminded the community of other options available to assist businesses impacted by COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn these difficult and uncertain times, the ATO is doing everything it can to reduce stress from tax and super related obligations,\u201d Mr Jordan said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Options available to assist businesses impacted by COVID-19 include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deferring by up to six months the payment date of amounts due through the business activity statement (including PAYG instalments), income tax assessments, fringe benefits tax assessments and excise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Allowing businesses on a quarterly reporting cycle to opt into monthly GST reporting in order to get quicker access to GST refunds they may be entitled to<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Allowing businesses to vary Pay As You Go (PAYG) instalment amounts to zero for the March 2020 quarter. Businesses that vary their PAYG instalment to zero can also claim a refund for any instalments made for the September 2019 and December 2019 quarters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Remitting any interest and penalties, incurred on or after 23 January 2020, that have been applied to tax liabilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Working with affected businesses to help them pay their existing and ongoing tax liabilities by allowing them to enter into low-interest payment plans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Businesses wanting to utilise any of these options can contact us over the coming weeks.
