Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the border controls that will come into effect at midnight on Wednesday (March 25) are essential to slow the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cExtraordinary times call for extraordinary measures,\u201d the Premier said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are not directed at our border communities who cross to shop or work, attend medical appointments and return to their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are to stop holidaymakers leaving southern States and risking the spread of this virus through Queensland.\u201d<\/p>\n

From midnight Wednesday:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Border roads will be closed with police checking vehicles on major highways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Advice will be given to aircraft passengers at departure point that travellers to Queensland will be required to self-isolate for 14 days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Travellers arriving at Queensland airports will be met by police and other officers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Rail services will be terminated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Exemptions include:<\/strong><\/p>\n

            \n
          • Freight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Emergency vehicles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                \n
              • Emergency workers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                  \n
                • Those travelling to and from work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                    \n
                  • Court orders, including Family Court<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                      \n
                    • Compassionate grounds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                        \n
                      • Medical treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        Anyone travelling to Queensland, who doesn’t usually live in\u00a0 Queensland, for any other reason will have to agree to self-isolate for 14 days, sick or not.<\/p>\n

                        Penalties include fines of up to $13,345.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                        Police are developing methods to identify vehicles in border communities to make frequent essential border crossings easier \u2013 such as a permit.<\/p>\n

                        The State Government said the Queensland\/NSW border was last closed at the end of World War I to contain the Spanish flu.<\/p>\n

                        Premier Palaszczuk said the better the community observed measures to restrict travel, avoid personal contact and stay in their homes and suburbs the sooner the virus spread could be contained.<\/p>\n

                        \u201cPeople should stay in their own States and in their own suburbs,\u201d the Premier said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                        \u201cThat applies to Queensland as well.<\/p>\n

                        \u201cPeople in the south-east should not travel to other parts of the State.<\/p>\n
